Hydrogen Ships
Ships are quickly becoming the biggest source of air pollution in the European Union. It is estimated that by 2020 emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from ships will exceed land-based emissions in Europe. As a result Iceland has plans to power all the ships in its fishing fleet using hydrogen cells.
Storage of hydrogen on ships can be a challenge, given the limited opportunity to refill them when out at sea. A potential solution could be to generate hydrogen from sea water on board, using electrictity from wind power and solar panels to power the process.
